Causes and prevention of back pain
Friends, the problem of back pain is increasing a lot in the present time. It is found most in women. The biggest reason for this in women is working while bending. Lifestyle and eating habits are also very much responsible for back pain.
Back pain
Back pain is spreading like an epidemic. The number of working days lost due to back pain in the world is more than any other disease. In urban life, every second person is suffering from back pain, be it a man or a woman. Why is this so? Before knowing the answer to this, let us know what is back pain? When there is pain in the lower part of the spine, it is called back pain, whose medical name is Lumbago.
Structure of Back bone
There are 33 vertebrae in the spine, out of which 7 are in the upper part which are called cervical vertebrae (from C-1 to C-7). There are 12 vertebrae in the middle part (from T-1 to T-12) which are called dorsal or thoracic vertebrae. There are five vertebrae in the lower part which are called lumbar vertebrae (from L-1 to L-5). Even below that there are nine more vertebrae in the pelvic cavity (5 sacral and 4 coccygeal).
The nerves of our body are connected with these 33 vertebrae of the spine. Each vertebra has its own field of work. The vertebrae of the spine are connected to each other - there is a pad between one vertebra and the other. There are 31 pairs of nerves in them, half of which give information to the brain and the remaining half carry the orders of the brain to the muscles. These 62 nerves connect the spine with the main nervous system and the brain. The spine has to take the support of 400 muscles and 1000 ligaments to do its work smoothly. The vertebrae of L-4 and L-5 affect the muscles of the lower part of the waist, the part below the knee, the ankle, the paw and the sciatic nerve. When there is swelling or any disorder between these two vertebrae, then back pain occurs. That is why, when back pain increases, the muscles of the legs are also affected and getting up or sitting becomes difficult.
Causes of back pain
This disease is a disease of today's lifestyle. Our life has become comfort-oriented. We have stopped walking straight. Now we do most of our work sitting or standing. While driving a car or scooter, the lower part of our spine is stressed. We sit on the sofa and watch TV by bending our waist a little, we read lying down. While working on the computer in the office, we do not sit straight, due to which our posture deteriorates. The disc between L-4 and L-5 gets swollen, the nerves connected to it get pressed and due to that pressure there is pain. People who sit all day get this disease very quickly. People who work standing all day, like housewives work standing in the kitchen for hours. When teachers stand for hours, there is pressure on L-4 and L-5.
People who are overweight also suffer from back pain due to excessive pressure on these two muscles. Even during pregnancy, when women start gaining weight, they suffer from back pain but when it increases due to our carelessness, it can even make us disabled.
prevention of back pain
The treatment of back pain is to always keep the spine straight. That is why in severe cases doctors recommend wearing a belt for back pain. This pain reduces by walking because walking straightens the spine. If there is swelling between the L-4 and L-5 vertebrae, the distance between these two vertebrae increases which increases further due to bending forward. That is why bending forward is prohibited in case of back pain. Bending backwards is beneficial to reduce this distance. There are many asanas in yoga in which the lower part of the waist can be kept healthy. These asanas are - Ushtrasana, Bhujangasana, Shalabhasana, Makarasana etc. There are many other activities which provide relief in back pain. By practicing these yogasanas and activities regularly, one can get rid of back pain very quickly and permanently. Remember, back pain cannot be cured permanently by using any medicine. Painkiller pills/medicines provide relief only for some time. Being a doctor, I can say with conviction that there is no medical cure for back pain. Only by doing yogasanas can one get rid of back pain forever. But remember to do yogasanas only under the supervision of a qualified yoga teacher and until your back pain is cured, do not do any asanas that involve bending forward. Also, always sit straight, do not watch TV while lying down, do not sit crookedly on the sofa and do not lift heavy weights. While getting up from the bed, do not get up straight, get up only by turning on your side. If you are overweight, then pay attention to your diet to control your weight.
